Understanding Imposter Syndrome: How a Counsellor Near You Can Help

Imposter syndrome affects individuals across all walks of life. It’s the overwhelming feeling that you’re not good enough, despite evidence of your abilities. Whether you’re a professional struggling with self-doubt at work or a parent questioning your worth, imposter syndrome can seep into all areas of life.

In this blog, we explore the root causes of imposter syndrome and discuss practical steps to overcome it, with insights from me, Debbie Loring. I’m an experienced counsellor. I have been supporting clients for over 25 years, helping them regain self-confidence and authenticity in all aspects of life.

What Is Imposter Syndrome?

Imposter syndrome is the persistent fear of being exposed as a “fraud,” despite your accomplishments and qualifications. This feeling often manifests in:

  • Professional life: doubting your ability to lead or succeed in your role.

  • Personal life: feeling like you’re not good enough as a parent, partner, or friend.

  • Social interactions: questioning your worth or feeling unworthy of friendships.

These patterns of thought can lead to chronic self-doubt and anxiety. Imposter syndrome is more than a passing feeling—it’s a barrier to living as your true self.

In many instances, when I’m working with business owners, I find that they too are suffering from imposter syndrome. Behind every business is a business owner who has their own fears and doubts and uncertainties, and often they have nobody to turn to. So I work with business owners to identify the root cause of their imposter syndrome, remove it, and then give them the confidence to actually sell their product and service at the right level of investment, and also ensure that they’re dealing with clients who they know, like and trust and pay their own invoices on time.

How Imposter Syndrome Begins

Many individuals struggling with imposter syndrome can trace their feelings of self-doubt back to their formative years. I often find that these issues begin between the ages of 5 and 18, as beliefs about self-worth take shape during childhood and adolescence. During these crucial years, experiences of criticism, comparison, or unmet expectations can deeply affect how one views themselves in adulthood.
